 Antique Edwardian

Hand Carved Shell Cameo Brooch

in Gold Over Silver Filigree Frame

Idealized Classical Female Portrait with Morning Glories

c. 1900

Please Note: Kenn’s magnified photos will allow you to see detail normally visible under a loupe, or other strong magnification. This enables you to better see exactly what you are buying. Some of these details, such as wear or scratching, will not be visible to the naked eye. Please message us if you have questions.

This is a pretty brooch, sizeable yet delicate with its delicate lacy filigree frame. The hand carved shell image is in the Idealized Clasical Greek style, with the woman’s hair tied loosley back, and her gently draped toga framing her neck and shoulders.

The use of flowers at the shoulder & nape of the neck would become almost standard for cameos, right up into the 1950s – most of them vaguely resembling hibiscus. One thing I really like about this particular piece is that the flowers are recognizeable as Morning Glories, which have  multiple meanings in the Victorian / Edwardian language of flowers. They can mean love in vain; but they may also symbolize hope, ressurection, etc.

Many cameos were portraits of actual people.  By the late 19th century the tradition was an "idealized" image, often presented in a manner consistent with Classical Greek literature. This piece is the likeness of a young girl with a sweet, demure expression.

The carving does not appear to have done by a master carver; but I do believe it was probably done on the Italian seacoast, (probably Torre del Greco), possibly by a skilled carver apprenticed to a master. It does not appear to be done by an ametuer; and does not have the crude carving seen in so many of the pieces done in the US to meet the demand that started in the Deco period and extended into the 1950s. The artist was skilled enough to incorporate some of the natural color of the shell into the image – strands of hair, a blush to the cheek.

I try to be complete and accurate in my descriptions, but am no expert on most of the items I list.If you have doubts or questions, ask, and please be specific. I do not get too exuberant about cleaning the vintage and antique jewelry we intend to sell. Many people prefer varying amounts of patina and should be able to choose the materials and products used on their items.

All sales final unless the item has been grossly misrepresented. We do not guarantee smoke/pet free environments, though we try not to buy soft goods that have been exposed.

We want happy customers, so if there is a problem, message us so we may resolve it BEFORE leaving negative or neutral feedback.  We ask you to be fair and understand that we will always try to resolve any issue with our items or service.. Our customers are very important to us.
