Pair Chinese Guardian Lions Cizhou Pottery
These antique Chinese Cizhou stoneware Lions or Foo Dogs were perhaps Joss stick holders at one time. The baskets on their backs were once open, I believe , to accept the
incense sticks. They have an old label on the bottom of one with the word Sung in script. My feeling is that these two fine sculpture are Sung ( Song) dynasty and very rare forms.
They have some cracks in the thick , clear glaze and one has cracks in it’s drum shaped base and the rear of it’s head; my phots show the condition pretty well. Both Lions have many areas of black residue from perhaps an overall paint job earlier
in their lives. It scratches off with my thumbnail, and I wish I had cleaned them before I took the photos.
