The Shrine of Our Lady of Buglose

Buglose is a place of pilgrimage in the Pyrenees, where the veneration of Our Lady apparently goes back to the fifteenth century.

Then, in 1570, the statue of the Blessed Virgin miraculously escaped the fury and hatred of the Huguenots. Catholics managed to hide the statue and save it in a nearby marsh.

In 1620, tradition reports that a shepherd observed the strange sight that his ox was licking a big lump deep in the mud. There he found a statue of the Blessed Virgin, made out of a block of soft stone weighing nearly 400 kilograms.

Bishop Du Sault of Dax (the nearest city) wanted to bring the statue of the Virgin to the parish church in Pouy but the horse pulling the carriage would not move forward and the convoy had to be stopped. This was considered to be a sign of divine will: Our Lady wanted to stay in Buglose.

Father Labarrière wrote in a book entitled “History of Our Lady of Buglose and Annals of the Birthplace of Saint Vincent de Paul,” published in 1857, that on May 16, 1623, Bernard Ducassou came to Buglose on pilgrimage with his mother, his pastor and others. His left leg was covered with seven purulent ulcers. When he reached Buglose, he spent the night in prayer before the ancient statue and the next day was washed in the fountain. Immediately, the ulcers healed and closed up.

A chapel was built in 1662 in the presence of a large crowd and many miracles were reported that year. Since Buglose is also the birthplace of Saint Vincent de Paul, and the house where he was born and spent his boyhood is open for visits. Of course this house is often an additional stop for pilgrims on their way to the famous shrine of Our Lady of Buglose, where miracles are still granted to the faithful.
