ANTIQUE Advertising RESTAURANT DINER Framed Under Glass 14+ DAILY SPECIAL SIGNS

Description

ANTIQUE FRAMED UNDER GLASS RESTAURANT/DINER SIGNS

Interesting and unusual antique, early 1900s through 1920s original advertising signs and wood frame measuring 14" long, 9-1/2" tall and about 1-1/2" deep.  Holder is made of old black painted wood with a frame edge and glass front – back is a narrow wood pocket, filled with about 14 original signs and a cardboard backing piece.  Designed to seat onto an interior front window ledge of a restaurant or diner, it is filled with a variety of wonderful, hand lettered signs on heavy colored and plain cardboard.  Filled with both fancy lettering and simple block lettering, most advertise the "special of the day" including:

"Surprise your stomach with our MOCK TURTLE SOUP";

"IRISH STEW";

"FRIED LIVER AND POTATO SALAD";

"FISH CAKES TO-NIGHT";

"Why, of Course! SOUR KROUT and MASHED POTATOES";

"GOOD TOGETHER – FRANK-FORT and POTATO SALAD.";

"WATCH This Space for LUNCH";

"Give your kidneys a treat with – KIDNEY STEW";

"Nothing better ROAST BEEF and MASHED POTATOES";

"Fine Eatin- CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP";

"HOT LUNCH TO-DAY A.T. & P.M.";

"Swell STEWED CHICKEN MASHED POTATOES AND DRESSING";

"KID ROAST MAY 18.";

"DELICIOUS OUR SNAPPER SOUP";

"LUNCH FOR SATURDAY NIGHT";

"WHAT’S BETTER THAN NOODLE SOUP?"; and

"BUTTER MILK 5 CENTS A GLASS".

There is also an old trimmed RED MAN CIGARS color advertising sign which has been used to promote BRICK CHEESE, SARDINES, SWIETZER SANDWICHES on the back – many of the signs have advertising on both sides.

Condition of the frame is sturdy and solid although the back panel has an age related shrinkage crack – does not show or affect stability – there is light rubbing, scratching and wear to the wood edge consistent with usage – glass is old and slightly wavy.  Individual signs are worn, showing wear to the edges from fitting in and out of the holder – lots of spotting, staining, tanning, fading, etc. – none of this detracts and shows only minimally when sign is displayed behind the glass in the fitted frame – these reflect daily usage marks, but cardboard is still strong and pliable – these have a wonderful shabby look.

Think this is such a fun set – can just imagine the sign being changed out every morning to advertise the daily special, hoping to entice hungry diners.Standing upright for display, it would be a wonderful addition to any kitchen or advertising collection – think it is fun to alternate the signs, depending on color scheme and food preferences. Neat addition to any home or display!
