Antiques in good taste – harmic.little

A rare and superbly worked ‘Adam and Eve’ needlework sampler
of large size stitched and signed with the name of the maker,
Elianor Jones aged 10 years and the place of her residence,
and possibly her birth,Ty Croes in Anglesey, Wales,
and the date 1825.

This beautiful sampler has a number of very unusual features both in terms of the maker and of the design. It is large in size, measuring approximately 16 x 20 1/2 inches including the frame. It begins with a very moving rhyme which clearly states Elianor’s inspiration for what must have
been a long and difficult exercise in making this amazing sampler. It goes as follows:

Two things have I required of thee, deny me them not before I die.
Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty

nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me lest I be full
and deny thee and say ‘who is the Lord’, or lest I be poor and
steal and take the name of my God in vain

There are a number of unusual decorative embellishments on the main field of the design (see the photographs provided below)
including, top-left, a large crown with the GR cypher above it; there is a representation of the Tower of London, angels, dogs, birds, and a large
sailing ship. Of course, the main subject of the sampler is Adam and Eve standing under the tree of knowledge. The sampler is signed Elianor Jones, Ty Croes,1825. Ty Croes is on the island of Anglesey in Wales. Unusually, there is what
appears to be a line of latin inscription along the very bottom of the sampler but it is difficult to read with any certainty.

The sampler is in generally good condition with only some wear along the border areas. The main body is in very good condition.  The colors are still in very good condition. The sampler is mounted in a new maple effect frame.

Thanks for this superb sampler and good luck – we hope you win!
