8 Antique 19thC Civil War Letters Lieut Col Joseph Stedman, 42nd Massachusetts

…………The letters in this auction were recently found, along with a large lot of other letters from the Stedman Family of Medfield, Massachusetts. We just finished listing one auction containing 20 letters written by the Medford Gunsmith, Cyrus Stedman with descriptions of his travels to the California & Klondike Gold Rush. His oldest son, Joseph Cyrus Stedman, was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Civil War and this auction contains 8 letters written by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Stedman. He was a member of the 42nd Massachusetts, which was a 9-month regiment. The letters are very detailed in describing his joining and traveling to Washington DC. “It was a long exhausting march” and is very detailed on what he saw along the way. I am not going to describe every event in these letters but here are a few instersting sections.

……Lieutenent Joseph Stedman speaks of how Washington is, “nothing but a giant Garrison, 15,000 men here, 12,000 there, ect.” One letter is dated April 24th, 1861, which is 12 days after shots were fired at Fort Sumter. This letter was written in Annapolis and he describes NY, MA & RI Regiments on troop ships all lined in a row. He describes this as a “gay scene, with lots of cheering from all the boats.” Brigadier General Butler tells the mayor of Annapolis “that if any of his men are shot or molested, he would burn Annapolis to the ground.” Some of the descriptions are interesting even though they are only describing guard duty or camp life, but he does speak of his company performing an enormous job of seizing “27,000 guns and confronting an immense mob.”

…… There is a fascinating 1863 letter that carefully details the battle of Galveston Texas. He speaks of gun boats captured by the rebels, POW taken to Houston and Rebel & Union strategies during the battle.

….There is a March 23rd, 1863 letter from Bayou Gentilly, Louisiana. This is a very interesting letter and the 42nd Massachusetts had many different assignments such as protecting railroad and communication lines. There is talk of a Lieut Col Stickney of the 47th Regiment, and the Junction with Lieut Col Loutelle of the 26th Regiment. “A Severe engagement ensued, with the Rebels.” The battle lasted for an hour & twenty minutes. At this point, 400-500 union soldiers and 12 pieces of Artillery fought 3000 rebels, many of them Cavalry. The 47th lost 8 killed and 30 wounded, but the rebel losses were much larger. There are many more interesting facts and information in these letters, which I will leave to the high bidder to discover, but one interesting 2 page letter has a hand written song called, The Celestrial Railroad. This is not the 1876 Hawthorne story titled “Celestrial Railroad”, but is an original song written and signed by “Albert E. Farwell.” I have tried to find this song on the net, using the words and tit is not mentioned anywere.

……There is No reserve on these nine Lieutenant Colonel, Joseph Stedman, Civil War Letters. They are easy to read and very interesting. There is No reserve and remember, we give a 100% unconditional money back guarantee on the content and authenticity of these letters.

….Don’t forget to check out the 28 California Gold Rush Letters we are listing tonight, which were written by Joseph’s Father and Gunsmith, Cyrus Stedman.

…..You will find two more auctions coming up in a couple of days. One which contain a large amount of empty envelopes from this same family. They date from the 1860s to the 1930s and still retain their original stamps. I will be also listing a large amount of personal Stedman Family Letters, which are not related to either the Gold Rush or to the Civil War, but are still filled with interesting Massachusetts and Stedman family History.

2012 UPS & USPS PRICE INCREASES

It has recently come to our attention that the shipping costs that the calculator has been providing for our bidders have been higher than normal. We have not changed our shipping department in any way. We strive to make sure that our customers pay close to exact costs as possible. When items are packed and exact costs are figured for the label, any excess costs paid will be refunded. At the beginning of 2012 the shipping cost for UPS Ground increased 4.9% and 4.6% for the Post Office. The shipping calculator pulls its figures directly from UPS and USPS and, unfortunately, these price increases are out of our hands.

As always, we strive for 100% satisfaction and do our best to provide our customers with the best service possible. We encourage you to email or call us or concerns you may have regarding shipping.
