SUPERB ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER PICTURE FRAME

Early 1900's
Exceptional early 1900's Sterling silver frame hand-made in Peru, measuring 13-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches, with loads of silver hand-formed into exquisite scrolls & feathering, along with large repousse free-form panels. The hand-stamped central border is outstanding, as well as the varied accents spread throughout this gorgeous, never monogrammed frame. The fine silver is attached by tiny silver nails to a thick, beautiful mahogany backing that measures a tiny bit under 1/2 inch thick, with a hinged door & a wonderful mahogany easel. Both the frame & the wood backing have superbly shaped scalloped edging with a highly decorated double cartouche to the top of the frame.
It measures a very large 13-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches on the outside & 9-1/2 by 7-3/8 across the glass. The frame is in with a few minor indentations, 2 small creases to the top far right cartouche, & a tiny corner of the wood which is cracked, but secure (see photo). The frame is highly reflective & I mention these only to be thorough, because it looks incredible & the condition is remarkable for its age with fine patina in all the right places. I had to polish some areas while looking for the hallmarks, which are on opposite sides at the bottom & read: Peru, ELM (not sure), & 925 (Sterling). These large frames are very difficult to find from this era & this one is absolutely exquisite.

I try to describe all items accurately and to give good visual support through photographs and text of what I feel is accurate information.
Selling antique and vintage items is not an exact science and a lot of the time it is based on educated guesswork.
If there is clear provenance then I will provide it. If not, I will give an opinion expressed with a level of confidence based on my knowledge and experience. I am not so arrogant to assume that I am always correct. I would never deliberately mislead, but I occasionally get things wrong.
For any purchase the buyer should make an INFORMED decision, based on the information provided and if they are in ANY doubt, then it is best not to place a bid.
