From a Local Long Island Estate that I am currently clearing……
This auction is for:
A CHARMING ANTIQUE “RAINBOW DYES” COUNTRY STORE COUNTER TOP DISPLAY WOODEN CABINET.
Besides being a wonderful antique display piece it could be re-purposed as a medicine cabinet in a vintage decor bathroom! This cabinet is “two-faced” literally!One side of the cabinet has a mirrored door with a handle with a push button latch.When the door is opened it reveals 18 cubbie holes, which is where the various dye packets were stored. beneath each cubbie is a printed color’s name: cream, pink, rose, black, orange, yellow, gray, dark green, green, dark brown, navy blue, baby blue, tan, heliotrope & violet.
Inside the top is a shelf with a curved top. Inside is a label which reads: RAINBOW DYESLAMONT CORLISS & CO.Selling Agents
“This cabinet is loaned to the dealer only as long as he uses it exclusively for the display and sale of RAINBOW DYES”
The other side of the cabinet also has a door that opens to real the other side of the cubbies. Painted over gold leafing reads:Made of solid wood, all original hinges & locks. And all of the benefits of purchasing these dyes for 10 cents a package.
I believe this cabinet dates to the very early 1900’s.
The only flaw I can find is a piece of the moulding over the mirror is missing (see pictures).
Just a wonderful piece of advertising history!
