This
Gorgeous Dieppe bodkin case carved in relief with birds and intricate floral pattern.
The pull-off lid is gold mounted with scrolls and flowers. French C1750.
It was made in Dieppe, France by the mid of the 18th century.
Dieppe was, in its heyday, the primary port for all shipments of good bound for Paris.
A sea-cost village in the North of Normandy, it became a gathering place
for seafaring crew as they left the ships, having taken up carving in their spare time
upon the slow moving ships and then turning that into their trade seaside.
The Dieppe carvings rival any in the world, fill museums worldwide and are among the most charming.
The details of the etui’s carving are gorgeous. It is 12 cm – 4 3/4” long
and remains in wonderful conditions, no cracks, damage or repairs
