You are a 19th century Eskimo carved wooden mask probably from King Island, Alaska circa 1860. It measures approx. 10 1/2 inches tall, 8 1/2 inches wide, and approx. 3 inches deep. The mask has an exceptional untouched surface with great old patina. This mask is very similar to other examples of Eskimo masks from King Island that I found on the internet. Cowan’s Auctions sold a similar mask with very similar features and surface. Auction: 2004, American Indian Art Auction / Sept 18-19 – American Indian Art > .Arctic > Carvings. The large forehead and chin are also similar to other King Island examples found in the the New Bedford Whaling Museum Photo Archives.
CONDITION: Good to excellent. No cracks or chips. No old repairs. The surface is untouched and original.
