WEATHER VANE ANTIQUE: ANTIQUE BANNER, GILDED COPPER and IRON,
24.5″x 28″, AAFA
If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos
This is a Weather Vane I bought from a man down in Warren, Rhode Island, who had a shop, but was in the process of closing it up. He said he had been in the business long enough and things weren’t getting any better. It was really dirty when I got it; I cleaned it with mineral spirits and water. I took the base from an old Buddha head and had friend who is an expert metal worker fashion a new supporting rod, the only part of which you can see is that bit below the large ball. We kept it outside for a while on a different and larger supporting rod.
As it sits now, this Vane is 24 1/2 inches tall, and 28 inches wide. The large ball is 6 inches in diameter. I am sure that all of the parts except the banner are copper. I am pretty sure the banner is cut out from sheet iron.
I don’t have a clear idea of how old this Vane is. The man in Warren said he got it with a lot of other stuff a long time ago from a widow in one of the large houses there who was cleaning out her attics.
The photos give an excellent idea of the beautiful form and patina of this interesting and wonderful object.
If you should have , please don’t hesitate to contact me, and thanks for looking.
AAFA
AAFA means Antique Americana and Folk Art and is used as a short cut to finding items that are true antiques, not reproductions, and are American. I guarantee that all of my items are as described. I will only use the AAFA designation for items which fit the criteria.
Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the Weather Vane itself, but I did my best to capture him as he is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match.
Winning Bidders: please pay for your item within three days of this auction’s close.
