Vintage Antique Jerome New Haven Wind-up Stenciled-Painted Clock Oval Glass Dome
Here’s an old clock with an oval glass dome to go over it. The back of the clock has a piece of paper with not only the name of the clock but how to regulate and oil this. Besides the instructions on the label, it also has “Botsford’s Improved Patent Lever Marine Time Piece… Manufactured by the Jerome Manufact’ng Co. New Haven Ct.”.
The base including the dome on it measures 11″ high and it is 5 1/2″ x 8 1/8″ across the base. The clock itself measures 8 1/2″ high and 6″ across the widest part. As you can see, the clock itself is very thin in front of the mechanism. The front of the clock seems to be a hard composition with hand painted stenciling or enameled… maybe both. The painting is still bold, bright and un-worn but there is crackling within the background painted surface on the front but not on the back. It has a porcelain face…. there are a couple of tiny hairlines in the porcelain. The base is wood that has been painted black. There was a little hand painted decoration at the front of the base but that is pretty much worn away. Around the top of the base, there is a very old piece of rope that is nailed on and that is what the glass dome sits on. Although we can see that the rope is very old, we have no idea if it is original to this. There are three little brass ball feet on the base. There is paint wear and paint loss within the back area on the the base behind the clock. We can tell the glass dome is very old. It has a couple of dimples, a little waviness to it and there is tiny chipping all along the rim that sits on the base. It is still very nice and clean plus it is crystal clear! When trying this with a clock key that we had since this does not have one, we could only wind it counter clock wise and nothing happened. When touching the little wheel at the top, it spins for just a split second then stops. At the present time, it is in non-working condition. Overall, it is quite a sweet and charming looking clock.
