Offered for your consideration is a very nice antique Finnish Puukko style scout and/or hunting knife.  The knife is unmarked and it’s an especially well-made example of this classic Scandinavian knife.  This was a traditional design in Finland and similar knives were made by numerous makers, especially in and around Kauhava.  Iisakki Jarvenpaa was one of Kauhava’s best known makers and they offered many different sizes and variations of this design, although I have no way if knowing it’s one of theirs.  Kauhava was the Puukko center of Finland and had over 150 registered makers, so I really have no idea who the maker could have been.

If you’re a knife collector, enthusiast, or just appreciate a high-quality, well-made knife and you haven’t had the pleasure of owning a classic Finnish knife, you owe it to yourself to have at least one example of these fantastic knives. These knives are almost always of exceptional quality and their performance and durability are rarely matched. They are exceptionally versatile knives that were usually made by highly skilled craftsman whose skills were passed down through the generations. Most older examples feature hand forged blades that were zone tempered.

The knife has seen light use and remains very nice.  It has not been cleaned or buffed and remains original.  The knife has been well cared for over the years and shows no signs of abuse or rough treatment.

The knife was beautifully crafted and offers full measures of the excellent quality and craftsmanship that these knives were known for. This is a particularly sturdy example and the blade is a bit thicker than usually seen on this style.  The integrity of the blade is excellent. The thick carbon steel blade was skillfully ground and is free of significant corrosion or pitting, showing just a bit of pin-prick surface peppering. These knives are very often found with substantial corrosion and/or pitting due to long-term sheath storage.  The blade displays a nice carbon patina and has a great look all the way around. The blade has been only very lightly and carefully honed and isn’t far from full.  It has deep, narrow fullers on either side and the blade has a clip that’s a bit more pronounced than usually seen.  The blade has been lightly sharpened and shows very little sharpening loss.  It’s free of grinder marks or harsh sharpening abrasions with just some fine hairline sharpening abrasions as shown.  The edge remains nice and it’s free of any nicks, chips, dings, or damage. The blade retains it correct profile and the tip is intact and original with no burrs or blunting.  The guard is of nickel silver and the shape is a bit unusual for this style.  The guard remains rock-solid and free of marring or damage with just a bit of light tarnish/verdigris that will easily wipe off.  The handle is of stacked leather with an heavy lacquer or varnish coating, which was very common for these knives.  The lacquer has just a couple tiny spots of flaking and a bit of cloudiness, but it remains very nice.  It’s much nicer than usually seen, as these are often found with the lacquer completely gone.  The handle has a great look and is free of any damage.  The pommel is of aluminum and remains completely tight as well.  It has a few tiny dings with no serious marring or damage and it remains very nice.  The entire knife is completely solid and tight, with not a wiggle or rattle anywhere.

The blade is 4-5/8″ and the knife measures 8-7/8″ in overall length.

The sheath is the original and remains in as well.  It was crafted from soft leather ina traditional style.  The leather is free of any cuts, tears, or damage and shows just a few missing stitches.  The tip and throat were reinforced with a non-ferrous metal, likely nickel.  The front panel was nicely embossed and the belt loop remains tight and problem-free.  The sheath shows very little wear and it’s very nice.

A great-looking, well-made example of this classic Finnish knife!!
