You are a nice little wooden primitive Firkin.
This Firkin is smaller than most I have seen.
The cover measures 4-7/8″ inches dia,
The vessel measures only 4-5/8″ inches dia on the top,
5-3/8″ inches on bottom,
6-7/8″ inches tall with handle,
and 5″ inches with out.
I have been told that the smaller Firkin are a little rarer than the larger ones.
The condition in my opinion is very good, all staples are present, there are no cracks, breaks in the wood, and the handle and hinge pins are perfect also. It would seem as if it was a little loosely constructed, but I am pretty sure it was supposed to be soaked in water to make the wood swell before use. If it was not made loose the saturation would cause the wood to split.
That is probably why these things are so collectible, there was a nice bit of thought and precision behind the construction of this early tool.
