Here is an old RCA microphone, I believe manufactured in the 1940s or ’50s. It is the model KN-1B, one of the rarer RCA mics and also an atypical design. They called it a pressure mic, and it shares characteristics with both ribbon and dynamic microphones. The “wire transducer” element looks a lot like, and functions just like a ribbon but instead of free-floating in the gap it is encased in a diaphragm. This makes it much more durable. The mic uses a standard XLR cable.
I’ve had this mic for a while and have been tracking them on . I have never seen one in this great shape pop up on here. Of the three I’ve seen sold in the past year, most recently one with some minor damage went for $183 shipped. It included a non-original stand. The other two both went for within the $200-250 range. None were as clean as this one, and none included the original box, so I think my starting bid of $199 would be an absolute steal.
This mic is tested and guaranteed working. By nature this design can be prone to hum pickup, but with careful positioning it can be reduced or even eliminated entirely. As you can see in the pictures, the condition is superb. A couple spots of chipped paint, most notably where the cable door swings open – something that looks to be unavoidable given the design of that door. Both RCA “meatball” logos look great! It will be carefully packed and promptly shipped, most likely within 24 hours of your payment.
