 This exceptional, antique china shoulder head dates to circa 1850-1860. Made in Germany by Alt, Beck & Gottschalck, it is in excellent, original condition. Although not damage, there is a faint, light-pink firing line beneath the chin, a small V-shaped mold flaw that is deep beneath the glaze under the left ear and removable, yellowed remains of perhaps wig tape or glue around the lower section of the back of the head. Standing a large 7 inches, it has a head circumference of 11 inches, a shoulder to shoulder measurement of 6.5 inches and a shoulder plate depth of 3.25 inches. Hand-painted, the face reveals molded, red-lined lids, celestial-blue eyes and a rather unusual, closed-mouth smile. A painted black pate that a wig will cover, can be seen at the top of the solid dome head. Via its four shoulder plate sew holes, it was intended to sit atop a large, cloth or leather body. Biedermeier china shoulder heads such as this one are quite rare. Rarer even is the large and heavy size of this well-preserved example.
