AFRICAN ELEPHANT HAIR RING
This auction is for a rare late 19th century ring that is beautifully designed with two strands of genuine African elephant hair set in solid gold fittings.
During the British rule of India in the latter part of the Victorian era, elephant hair was a popular material used as inlays in rings and bracelets. It was believed to bring good luck and elephant hair jewelry was highly prized.
The ring is a size 7 US and like many Victorian pieces, has no distinguishing marks making it difficult to identify the maker. It is in very good condition with just some typical minor wear and light surface scratches consistent with age and use.
