Can you imagine what it was like for Polia Pillin to reflect back on her life? . . . leaving a little town in Poland, 130 miles southwest of Warsaw, in 1924, and at age 15 beginning a lifelong American journey studying the arts and developing a style all her own? Chicago, Illinois in the mid and late 1920s – Santa Fe, New Mexico in the 1930s – Chicago again until 1948 when she made her home and her reputation as a painter and ceramicist in Los Angeles, California.

I guess she is best known for perfecting a technique of using colored clays to decorate her freshly thrown pots while still wet – then firing them – only to be removed from the kiln, glazed with a crystal-clear glaze and fired again. This produced a glassy surface that plays in light and becomes an integral part of the abstract creation.

Marc Chagall’s horses sometimes had wings and could fly. But Polia’s horses could not only fly; they could whistle. Personally, I think they’re singing along with the birds or maybe trying to imitate them. Only Polia knew, and her earthly journey ended in 1992 at age 83.

This pot has no damage whatsoever. It stands approximately 4 ¼” tall and is 4 ½” in diameter.

The rest of the description with more pictures continues below this memo about my two “Prime Directives:”

First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. I never end auctions early.

Second: I rarely clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. Normally I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I’ll tell you about it.
So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so’s you don’t forget about it later.

There is nothing I can add to what those who appreciate, collect and invest in the art pottery of Pillin already know better than I. Her works are listed most everywhere art is being discussed, bought and sold , and she is also noted with a biography in one of my favorite reference books: Artists in California 1786-1940 by Edan Hughes. If you don’t have a copy, you need one.

NO DISAPPOINTMENTS
