Lovely antique 1860’s
Civil War 3 piece silk set ~!

This exquisite antique 1860’s 3 piece ensemble was either in the process of being constructed or deconstructed. Included in the lot is a beautifully tapered button front coat , a typical Civil War vest or sleeveless dress top and a straight panel, lower ruffle skirt. The striped brown early silk has an irridecense to it which is why is looks stained in the photos. Any staining is mentioned below under flaws…this silk is gorgeous! The jacket has wool insert panels, and fine ruffled silk around the cuffs and down the jackets center back. Also included are other pieces including 2 sleeve cuffs, perhaps a collar, a jacket back? , silk bow shown on jacket front in some photos and other strips of waistband silk. The skirt may have had an upper overskirt of matching striped silk or the darker brown wool seen around the jacket collar and lower jacket points at one time. It is now simply a brown polished cotton…still looks beautiful as you can see. In the skirt back is a pocket where I assume the lady threaded a bustle wire through…or some other contraption! The over vest looks like it was never worn….arm holes are unfinished. It is lined in a muslin and as you will see, there is very early 1800’s hooks & eye closure. There are many Civil War period signs seen in the sewing such as the tiny decorative piped edges on the collar & cuffs. The following flaws are noted: Jacket is missing buttons, the darker brown wool has damage especially left upper front…the over vest hides this wool damage. There is a small silk hole lower bustle flap in jacket back. There is some silk damage and darning under the right underarm and darned areas both elbows. The over vest does have a large stain or fading in the back and as mentioned above the armholes are unfinished. There is a small silk hole upper left back. The skirt needs a hook & eye closure, the top ruffle is unfinished in back, one area of silk cluster holes left skirt side,  3rd ruffle up. There are some fine pin holes in the ruffle as well. The polished cotton in front and back are two different tones…one darker than the other…suggestive of over skirt at earlier time. There is a slight tear just below where the hook & opening is…minimal. You do have additional silk fabric & cuffs to work with and do restoration. This is a beautiful display piece…but will need some restoration. This gorgeous collection measures as follows:
Jacket
Bust: 30 inches
Waist: 20 inches
Underarm to sleeve end: 14 inches
Side seam: 10 inches
Overvest
Bust: 30 inches
Waist: 24 inches
Side seam: 8 inches
Skirt

Hips: 40 + bustle inches

Just a gorgeous, pre Victorian collection of ladies clothing !
