Fine and early view of the Mission at Santa Barbara, California
as painted by well-listed artist, Charles Albert Rogers (1848 – 1918).

This painting was done with oils on board and is mounted in its original, period Arts and Crafts gold-painted and ornamented oak frame.

The painting is signed and dated, lower right,
“C.A. Rogers 1901”

The location is inscribed in pencil on the back of the board,
“Santa Barbara Mission … Cal.” (in the artist’s hand).
SIZE

Painting – 12.5″ x 17″ / Frame – 18.25″ x 22.75″

The painting depicts a monk walking down the monastery steps at Mission Santa Barbara (founded in 1786). The work is beautifully painted in a romantic, impressionist manner, while retainingthe historical qualities of the Mission. The architectural details of the side monastery wing are correct, including the red clay tiled roof, the steps, and the arches.

Charles Rogers was a good artist and painter and his use of color, brushwork, composition and the perspective of the scene are outstanding.

This painting is in excellent original condition as shown in the photographs. It has not been restored or cleaned. There is a fair amount of separation to the darker paints, as you can see in the photographs. This doesn’t detract from the viewing experience at normal viewing distances. The separation could be in-painted by a conservator or restorer if the new owner feel it is necessary, but I like it the way it is.

The frame is in good original condition with some wear and small losses to the bottom right corner and a few other places.

Early California Mission paintings by Rogers are rare and have sold for quite a bit at auction. This is a fine example of his work.
