This is a very ornate antique solid sterling silver spoon from San Francisco, California. It is probably from around 1898 or so.
The goldwashed bowl is hand-engraved with a detailed scene of the “Cliff House, San Francisco”, which was a Victorian structure that was built overlooking Seal Rocks and the Pacific Ocean in 1896. It burned down in 1907. There is still a Cliff House there today, and it is a great place to stop and visit if you’re ever in the area. There is a restaurant, bar and gift shop and other sights to see, very nice.
It is large, about 5-1/4″ long.
The spoon itself is the popular, fancy Louvre pattern, introduced by Wallace of Connecticut in 1893.
No other engraving, other than the bowl design.
It is marked on the back of the handle with “Sterling” along with the old RW&S stag head hallmark for Wallace, a high-end company back then.
Condition: It is in very good condition. It has a tiny bit of very light surface scratching and a little tarnish here and there, not much.
It weighs about 16.1 grams or .57 ounce (.51 Troy oz.) on my digital point scale.
