BIG Hinged ANTIQUE Chocolate Mold EASTER RABBIT Basket Eggs Hare Vintage Metal

BIG

I’ve been collecting vintage and antique chocolate and candy molds for many years.  I used my extensive collection for making handmade Papier mache figures.  My work and collection has been featured in many publications over the years including Better Homes and Gardens and Wendy Mullen’s Comprehensive Guide to Chocolate Molds.  I find myself now devoting all of my time to my first love of painting and illustrating.  So many years of creating and designing has filled my studio and home to the brim.  So it’s time to let go of some of my treasures.  Please keep watching.  I hope to offer more molds in the coming weeks.

DESCRIPTION : 2 PC – Heavy Duty Large Hinged Antique Metal Chocolate Candy Mold Woven EASTER BASKET Eggs And HARE Rabbit.  * 2 attached metal clips This is a magnificent looking mold.  Of all my molds, this one always stood out because of it’s size and the way it was constructed.  It’s a very large Easter Hare sitting with his basket that is holding some giant sized eggs.  I always laughed at how big they were.  I wondered if this mold was created back when Ostrich eggs were all the rage.  Or maybe it is supposed to portray one of the lovely panoramic sugar eggs that used to be so popular.  I never found the time to actually do it, but I thought it would make such a unique figure if I painted the big egg to look like there was a hole in it with baby chicks looking out.  I often painted the eggs in all sorts of pretty Easter colors with stripes and polka dots.  My papier mache rabbits from this mold always sold well even though they were some of my most expensive pieces.  Sometimes I gave them a dusting of mica flakes just to give them that extra special sparkle.  I considered my finished pieces Easter heirlooms to be passed on.  It is in good working working order and can be used for molding in whatever craft medium you prefer.  This mold is full of great detail.  It has a heavy duty hinge that runs the full length of the metal frame.  It has strong metal straps that help support the rabbit and hold it in the frame.  It’s great for displaying because it opens up like a book.  It has it’s own attached clips for closing when casting your rabbit.

CONDITION :  I would consider the mold to be in good to fair used condition considering it’s age.  It was a high quality mold built for heavy use and has held up well.  The inside of the mold is still in pretty good shape.  It is still shiny.  There is a small amount of rust here and there, but if you oiled it well, you might be able to still use it for molding chocolate.  You would have to decide that for yourself.  Although the inside is beautifully done, it was meant to be a working mold.  The outside has a lot of heavy soldering where the metal bars join the mold to the frame.  The outside has a well used patina with some rust and discoloration where the base metal has worn thru.  It has an old crack in the upper  corner of the frame.  Refer to my pictures.  It may have been there as long as the mold has been in use.  This metal is so strong, I don’t think the frame would ever crack any further.  When photographing I also noticed a tiny hole near the bottom of the  basket where it joins the base.  It looks like it is just a place where some of the soldering has worn thin.  It is hard to see in my picture.  It could be easily repaired, but I prefer to leave it be.  It probably has always been like that as long as I have had it.  I just never noticed it before.  It does not effect using it.  The mold would benefit from a good cleaning.   It still has a bit of residue from some cooking spray I used to use when casting my papier mache. It makes a nice display piece.

SIZE :  Metal frame when closed is Approx. 7 1/2 ” wide x 13 ” tall  ….. Rabbit figure is Approx.  7 1/4 ”  wide x 12 ” tall

MAKERS MARK :  I have looked all over the mold, but can’t find a maker’s mark.  It may be in a well hidden place or worn off after so many years.  It is a quality mold.
