TWO DEALERS WERE CONFIDENT THAT THIS BOX/BARREL IS FROM THE 1700’s, AND THE MOST RECENT TIME ERA WAS ESTIMATED TO BE AROUND 1900. MOST DEALERS BELIEVE IT TO BE FROM THE CIVIL WAR ERA. I BOUGHT THIS AT AN ANTIQUE SHOP IN GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ABOUT 2004. THAT, HOWEVER, DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THIS ITEM CAME FROM GETTYSBURG DURING THE CIVIL WAR. IT WAS SOLD AS AN ANTIQUE, JUST LIKE MOST OTHER DECORATIVE ANTIQUES, AND THE ANTIQUE DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO IDENTIFY THIS PIECE. THIS COULD ALSO BE USED AS A BANK, AS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS. THIS ANTIQUE MYSTERY BOX IS 5-1/2 INCHES HIGH, TOP AND BOTTOM DIAMETERS ARE ABOUT 2-1/2 INCHES ACROSS, AND THE WIDTH AT THE WIDEST POINT IS 3-1/2 INCHES WIDE. WITH THE LID OFF, THE REMAINING HEIGHT IS ABOUT 4-1/4 INCHES. THE BARREL IS SOUND AND IN GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LID HAS A SMALL CRACK IN IT, OBVIOUSLY FROM AGE AND FREQUENCY OF USE. THE PIECE IS STILL VERY STRONG AND UNCOMPROMISED BY THE CRACK.
