Antique
Victorian Solid Silver & Enamel Pendant,

Emeralds (?), Rubies (?), Amethysts (?)
c1895

Exquisite
silver pendant, probably dating from 1895 to 1900.

I’m not
sure of its origin – very likely continental, with a french or maybe russian
influence.

It has a
beautiful design – two mythological figures (griffins?) support the central
gem,

which is held in a blue and white enamel setting, decorated with tiny
silver scrolls.

The
griffins are balanced on small arches, which hold pinkish-purple rubies

with a
somewhat larger ruby of the same colour between their heads.

Each of their
wings are decorated with a small, bright green emerald.

A
teardrop-shaped ornament is attached to the pendant, set with a wonderful,

plum-coloured amethyst and a dark green emerald.

The link appears to have a
very old restoration to the rear (see photo 11).

Not being
an expert, I have taken this to a jeweller for appraisal and

been informed that
the two larger gems are most definitely genuine semi-precious stones.

The smaller ones could only be
thoroughly examined for exact classification and clarity,

if they were removed
from their settings, which I was very reluctant to do.

But judging
by the elaborate and wonderful crafting of the silver,

I would assume that all
the jewels are genuine.

They certainly have a beautiful glow and sparkle, which
I unfortunately

wasn’t quite able to capture with my small camera.

This would
be a gorgeous gift for that special someone and

certainly an excellent addition
to a antique collection!

Size:  5.4 x 3.1 x 0.7 cm.

Weight
(without chain):  10.9 gr. (I don’t
think the chain is original,

but will leave it attached to the pendant)

Hallmarked:  935

Condition:  this is in very good condition, with

the
usual small signs of use, commensurate with age.

There is a very, very tiny
indentation to the silver setting of the

central gem (see photos 4 & 9) and it would perhaps benefit from a gentle polish,

to remove the light tarnish from the rear
side.

Old repair to the link of the teardrop ornament as mentioned above.
