ANTIQUE VAUXHALL GLASS SUFFRAGETTE COLOURS BROOCH ART NOUVEAU EDWARDIAN
Description
A most unusual, large vauxhall glass brooch, displaying the colours of the Suffragette movement.
Very early 20th century, circa 1908.
The brooch has a roped silver mount (tested but unmarked) and a deep purple vauxhall glass centre.
The glass appears almost black when placed on a solid surface but when held up to the light, glows vibrant purple. It has decorative flowers to the centre in shades of green, white and violet/purple (the colours adopted by the Suffragette movement).
Unfortunately there is some damage to the glass in the form of a narrow crack, a couple of surface chips and scratches. Photos 6 & 8 show this to the front and photos 4 & 12 to the back. It is totally stable and not noticeable in wear.
Original pin and ‘c’ clasp but the tube hinge has a replacement pin through it.
Measurements: 2" by 1.75".
Whilst this piece does have some injuries (TLC needed) it is made from a scarce purple vauxhall glass and has a suffragette theme to it; all in all still a very collectable brooch.
