A magnificent piece that I’m hoping someone can repair! Either Edwardian or Art Deco in age and an unusual example, in that it has the little extra guilloche slider at the top and a guilloche enamel dangle at the bottom which, though a different shade of yellow, I believe is original to the piece.
The enamel on the body of the perfume bottle is in perfect condition, as is the enamel on the little slider. Notice the wonderful repousse work to the silver – a little bit Art Nouveau, a little bit Art Deco (so I feel certain it dates to that transitional period between the two). The enamel of the lower dangle does show some damage i.e. there is a thin bit of missing enamel near the top. However, this is NOT visible to the naked eye – it just looks as though that is where the enamel naturally ends. Back to my belief that the dangle is original to the piece – in every way, except the more intense colour, it seems right. The patina, the age of the piece, the design to the guilloche, the styling of the piece itself – everything seems OK except the colour, which is a shade or two more intense. If not original to the piece, it is certainly from the same time period. The only hallmark I see is on the top of the dauber/lid, which is marked simply STERLING, so probably an American piece.
Now to the real damage. As you can see from the photos, one of the side loops securing the rope has broken away from the body and is missing some silver on its lower half, and the jump ring and end piece to the rope itself is missing. I’m hoping a jeweller can repair that loop – if not, I suppose worst case scenario is that one remove both side loops, still leaving one with a spectacular perfume bottle. The rope itself is frayed, but there is still enough intact that it offers a secure enough method of hanging the piece (please note, the knot in the rope was tied simply in order to keep the slider from falling off). Two very tiny dents to the silver on the back of the piece, not even worth mentioning. A superb piece, worthy of restoration. The bottle itself measures 1 3/4″ long by 11/16″ at its widest point by about 3/16″ deep/high. The dangle adds 3/4″ to the length for a total length of 2 5/8″ long. The slider is about 7/16″ long by 1/4″ high.
