Description:
This whimsy necessaire is a wonderful example of the Napoleonic prisoner of wart art.
These artifacts are almost entirely the work of French prisoners
held by the British in the period of 1800-15 and they were made out of animal bone scraps.
It has a total of 24 blades/tools for various uses opening in both ends
plus a pin to hold it locked in the closed position. All of the tools have a different shape.
Condition is excellent, all of the tools are intact and fold in and out nicely.
Notice the little carved *hooks* to move tools out.
One side is centered with a mirror.
It’s really hard to find such items and specially complete as this one.
It measures 10 cm long when folded. Apart from the visual appeal
and technical virtuosity of individual pieces, these objects are ‘social documents’
with a cultural value far beyond their status as military memorabilia.
