This is an Antique Padlock with an unusual locking mechanism whereby the lock bar opens and swings when the key is inserted. The key does not turn . It simply slides into the keyhole to open the lock . The lock bar is stamped ” Pat. July 30 , 1878 ” along with the ” R & E Co. ” ( Russell & Erwin ) logo. The key is also marked with this logo . The Lock is in good , working , condition with surface rust , remnants of old paint and light scratches. It measures 3 1/4 inches long by 2 1/4 inches wide by 1/2 of an inch thick. It has come to me from an old farm estate along with another Antique Lock and other antiques & primitive items . I endeavour to have an interesting and eclectic variety of items for sale .
