Early fine two Foot, 24 inch, Gunter’s Scale Boxwood Ruler by Belcher Bros
& Co New York, pre-dates slide rulers
Math, Trigonometry, and exact time keeping where, and still are, essential
to navigate the sea. Over time, we perfected the tools to navigate the sea
and today it is child’s play with the GPS system.
In past times the need to navigate the sea was a quest for many
scholars and inventors to improve the tools to achieve this goal.
One of the most important inventions in this quest, was the Gunter Scale.
Edmund Gunter invented a mechanical device, containing a logarithmic scale
of equal parts and trigonometric functions which, with the aid of a pair
of calipers (or dividers or a compass), could be used as a slide rule.
This device, called “Gunter’s scale,” or the “Gunter” by seamen, was soon
replaced by a true slide rule, containing two parallel logarithmic scales.
This information is from the website “Milestones in the History of
Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics, and Data Visualization,” an
illustrated chronology of innovations by Michael Friendly and Daniel J.
Denis.
Click here, to see the website, then scroll down to “1620 to
1628,” The time when Edmund Gunter invented the Gunter scale. Said website
also has an image of a 24″ Gunter scale. Click on the image to see a
larger image.
The Gunter’s Scale was as essential to chart a course as the chronograph
and the sextant or octant. The 24″ Gunter’s Scale was the most widely used
Ruler to navigate the sea up to the time when slide Rulers or discs became
available.
The beautiful Boxwood instrument offered here is a 24″ Gunter’s Scale
manufactured by the famous Belcher Bros. & Co out of New York.
The beautiful 24″ instrument offered here features in the front:
Scale of Inches (in tenths) 0″-24″

from the sharp pin of the divider, compass, or caliper used by the
navigator to calculate and chart the course.
