WILLIAM ANDERSON(1757-1837), was born in SCOTLAND and became an artist specializing in maritime themes. He first exhibited at the ROYAL ACADEMY in 1780 and continued to exhibit annually until 1811. He then exhibited intermittently until 1834. His best works were executed in the years 1790-1810, during the FRENCH REVOLUTION and NAPOLEANIC WARS at which time the demand for NAVAL and MARINE was high. Without question WILLIAM ANDERSON was one of SCOTLANDS greatest artists of the period. A lot of his paintings can be found in the NATIONAL COLLECTION and also in many other PRESTIGIOUS PRIVATE COLLECTIONS WORLDWIDE. Many of WILLIAM ANDERSONS works were unsigned and have been identified via their long standing provenances, see photo giving details of ownership and provenance. I have a long experience of paintings, drawings and prints and take care to ensure that my descriptions are as accurate as possible. I only stipulate an artist if I am reasonably sure it is by him/her. Where there is no signature or provenance, attributions are only made after research. When I am not familiar with an artist’s work but it is signed I accept the signature as correct unless there are obvious discrepancies (e.g. picture is wrong period, signature has been added later etc) Condition is, of course relative but if there is damage, foxing, staining, repairs etc. that would be apparent when the picture is framed then I mention these in the description. Old paintings and watercolours by their very nature are unlikely to be in pristine condition – the edges usually have stains/glue marks etc from previous mounts or frames and if glued to board it is unlikely to be acid free . If you need any more information do not hesitate to email before bidding. I have many happy customers – look at my feedback. If you have a question please do not leave it until the last moment!
