Antique French Gilt Brass Striking Repeating Carriage Clock By Drocourt c1890
This is for an antique French gilt brass striking and repeating carriage clock, by Alfred Drocourt, circa 1890.
The gilt brass Corniche style case, is rectangular in form, with a hinged hexagonal section grip swan neck carrying handle, and four corner supports. The case has beveled glass panels on all four sides, with an oval beveled glass top, to view the action of the escapement. Also with, a repeating button in front of the handle. The clock has a white enamel dial, with blued steel spade hands, black Roman numberals for the hours, Arabic five minute markings, and a gilded ‘sight’ ring to the outer edge. The clock has an eight day movement, with its original jewelled platform lever escapement, which strikes the hours and half hours on a gong, located on the back plate. On request, the repeating button repeats the last hour again. The underside of the case is stamped with the serial number ‘31696’. The back plate is stamped ‘Paris Make’, and is signed with the Drocourt logo ‘D – C’ either side of a carriage clock in an oval panel. The bracket for the gong is signed ‘A.D’ for Alfred Drocourt. Pierre and Alfred Drocourt are noted as one of the top maker’s of carriage clocks in the mid to late Victorian period, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d’Ailermont, the most important town for carriage clock manufacture at the time, as well as premises in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28 and Rue de Limoges. They made superb carriage clocks which were often decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in 1889. The son, Alfred, succeeded his father Pierre in the 1870’s. This carriage clock measures 111 mm in height, 78 mm in length, and 74 mm in width. The clock is complete with its key. The condition is generally excellent, without damage or repair, the movement and the gong are in full working order, there is a very small scratch to the porcelain dial. Please see images.
