In the greater Cincinnati area, investment bankers, old money and titans of industry cluster up in a part of town call “Indian Hill. Well the last of one of those families died, and an estate sale was held. That’s where I discovered this most unusual salt box. At least I’m pretty sure its intent was to hold salt.

The total height is 11 ¾”. The bottom of the box is 6” wide and 5 ¾” deep. The lid is 7 ½” by 6”.

That’s a great old hinge, but it isn’t likely the hinge this box was born with. You’ll see why I say that in a jiffy.

You can see the “shadow” and the holes where the original hinge once was. Very odd: I don’t recall seeing a salt box with only one hinge. There are usually two. Because it has but one hinge, the lid moves side to side loosely as you open or close it. It’s a puzzle.

The primary wood is pine. The veneer parquetry work appears to be maple and a darker wood; perhaps walnut – I just don’t know.

The rest of the description with more pictures continues below this memo about my two “Prime Directives:”

First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. I never end auctions early.

Second: I rarely clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. Normally I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I’ll tell you about it.
So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so’s you don’t forget about it later.

At one time or another, it has been repaired – a long time ago. Right now it’s mostly dirty and a back corner of the veneer needs to be glue. I’ll show you.

You can push back in place with your hand, but it should be glued and clamped by someone who knows what he’s doing. Not me! I hunt’m. You skin’m.

It’s a most unusual piece, no question about that.

GOOD LUCK
