Antique Brass Faced/Plate Experimental Bridle Bit Military Cavalry Indian Wars

This is I believe an experimental Military bit. I sold a very similar one recently that was an experimental bit manufactured by the Whitman Co, but while that bit did have the two snaps, it also had additional rein rings at the ends of the mouth-piece, total of 4 rein rings. This bit how-ever does not have the additional rings, it was not made to have them. It does have the two snaps of which the clip on one is missing/broken as seen in pictures #7 & 8. The bit is brass plated/faced and most of the plating has worn off of the mouth-piece, but the brass plating still covers about 80% of the side pieces and the snaps.

The bit has several markings of which some I can’t make out. If you look at picture #11, you can see where there were a series of numbers or letters on one end of the mouth-piece. I cannot make any of it out. On the other end of the mouth-piece from those markings is very faintly written “PATENT”. On the back of the mouth-piece from those markings is the name of a company and again I cannot make it out. It looks something like ………..sB&Co. Maybe JosB & Co. or TosH & Co. as seen in picture #12. There might have been several letters before these letters that I can see, but those other letters might have worn off. I’m sure that someone familiar with the Military contractors will recognize the company. Then on the other end of the mouth-piece from those markings is the word “FORGED”.

Except for the one broken snap, the bit otherwise is in good condition — no repairs or cracks. The mouth-piece measures 5 1/8″ and the sides are 6 1/4″ long, not including the rein rings.

This bit is being sold “no returns” and I’ll be happy to answer .

Bidders from the lower 48 states only please and payment would be appreciated with-in 4 days after the auction ends. Thank-you.
