A breathtakingly
beautiful and exceedingly rare decorative Art Deco bowl signed Etling, France,**
made of the absolutely extraordinary opalescent glass – so aptly described as “fire within ice” – for which the French
glass masters became world-renowned during the 1920’s-1930’s.
An extremely weighty
substantial piece no less impressive than the creations of Lalique,
Sabino, Verlys et al., proof of the exceptional quality of this stunning bowl
lies in the
truly prodigious manner in
which, depending on the light and the angle,
the glass very dramatically changes colour – immediately, right
before one’s eyes :
the superb thick ice-blue/white glass
captures the light from within its depthsilluminating it with an extremely vibrant fiery
glow in hues of gold, pink, silver and amber
– so spectacular, so awe-inspiring, so
absolutely phenomenal that it simply
defies description…
Please note, all the photos were taken exclusively in daylight only and were not enhanced
in any way
– I fully guarantee that (depending on the background and the type/amount of light),
the deep fiery glow appears to the naked eye
exactly as in the photos.
Equally outstanding
for its consummate artistry is the exquisite very high-relief design
depicting interwined gumleaves and gumnuts
– a floral theme obviously particularly significant for us here
in Australia –
all executed in minute detail, with three very
prominent clusters of
gumnuts forming the feet to the
underside. The exterior of the bowl has a satin finish
(acid-etched) and the interior is polished smooth.
As is widely
known, Paris during
the 1920’s/1930’s held a particular fascination for foreigners –
it
was the preferred and much-loved destination of visitors from all parts of the globe.
However, given that
the design on this bowl somewhat inexplicably depicts a
predominantly
Australian theme (the gumtree, or Eucalyptus tree, is
virtually non-existent in Europe)
and is a design that was exclusive
to Etling, one could possibly surmise that,
vice versa, during those same years, one of Etling’s talented glass artists
visited, and
became enamoured with, our own beautiful country
– subsequently paying us homage by designing this breathtaking bowl….
Dimensions
Diameter: 23.3 cm
Height: 5 cm
Thickness of the glass: 4 mm
Weight: 1.125 kg
Condition
The bowl is in perfect condition with no chips, cracks, scratches or fleabites and
virtually no signs of shelf wear to the feet.
To the centre underside there is some unevenness in the satin finish, an extremely minor
manufacturing flaw caused during the acid-etching process, virtually
imperceptible when on display and only more discernible on very close inspection or
when the bowl is held up directly against the light.
** Editions Etling – Paris **
Edmond Laurent Etling founded his firm “Société Anonyme Edmond Etling & Cie. ” in Paris after the end
of World War I with the intention of producing the most extraordinary and exclusive collection
of high-end Decorative Arts – notably bronzes, ceramics and glass – ever to be
offered by the one French retailer : thus began the history of the famed “Editions Etling”.
Etling commissioned works from the finest sculptors, ceramics designers and glass artists of thetime – among which such celebrated names as Chiparus, Claire Colinet, A.Godard, Lucille Sevin, Genevieve Granger, Georges Béal, Gazan and Marcel Galliard, to name but a few – assembling a dazzling array of unique works of art
which were retailed in his legendary store in Paris, Rue de Paradis no. 29.
No other retailer could boast such an impressive inventory: outstanding bronze sculptures andother superb bronze décor complements;
exquisite ceramics (figurines, perfume lamps, powder jars)
and sublime
opalescent glass creations
(vases, bowls, chargers, sculptures) no less
spectacular
and high-quality than those of his competitors Lalique, Sabino, Verlys, et al.
Bronzes and ceramics were produced in his firm’s foundry/studio and were respectively
inscribed/marked with the Etling Foundry mark, and “Editions Etling, Paris, France”
together with the
artist’s signature or initials.
Opalescent glass items were produced for Etling by
the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks, outside
Paris, and were stamped
within the mould “Etling France”
together with the Choisy-le-Roi/Etling catalogue number,
(with the exception of the limited
edition opalescent glass sculptures
e.g., the famed
masterpieces by Lucille Sevin, which were also signed in the mould by the artist).
Sadly the history of “Editions Etling” came to an untimely abrupt end during World War II:
Edmond Etling and all his family, being of the Jewish faith,
were deported to a concentration camp where, tragically, they all perished.
Today the name Etling is synonymous with what today are defined as
“objets de vertu”,
a term which although worded in French
(almost certainly in deference to the absolutely incomparable output of French Decorative Arts)
was actually coined by the English-speaking world – to define only those
more significantly beautiful rare objects of clearly outstanding artistic value.
