This spectacular vintage ladies gold Rolex watch from 1914 is arguably the most historically significant timepiece for sale on this website. It is a jewel for the Rolex collector, or perhaps just an individual wanting a superb example from the very dawn of this legendary company. We have never seen an earlier Rolex watch than this one offered for sale anywhere, either online or in the physical marketplace, and we are confident that it is, quite literally, among the dozen or so earliest pieces by this famous house to survive today.
As many of you will be aware, the Rolex Watch Company was founded by a German émigré, Hans Wilsdorf, the son of an ironmonger in Bavaria. The early progress of Wilsdorf has been well documented in the past and need not be repeated here, suffice it to say that Wilsdorf left his native country to move to Geneva in 1896 where he worked for the watch exporter Cuno Korten in dealing with their business in England and communicating with their English contacts.
After working at Cuno Korten for seven years, in 1903, Wilsdorf relocated, still aged only 22, to London. There has been considerable speculation as to why this change of country took place, but our view of the matter is simply that Wilsdorf was already aware that he would make a lifelong career out of the watch business and decided that he could utilise the contacts that he had already made in London on behalf of his previous employer to great effect when trading under his own steam.
After arriving in London, Wilsdorf spent another two years in the employment of a watch importer in Hatton Garden and finally, in 1905, commenced trading in his own right. The company he formed was “Wilsdorf and Davis”, this latter name being that of Wilsdorf’s early business partner, Wilsdorf’s relationship with whom was further strengthened when he married Wilsdorf’s younger sister.
The firm traded very successfully, almost exclusively in ladies’ watches at the very top level of the market, aimed at a wealthy “society” clientele. A number of their pieces, signed “W & D”, both on the movement and inside the case back are known to have survived and are of great interest to the collector, being often classed informally as “Pre-Rolex Rolex”, though are less valuable, and more common, than those manufactured pre-World War I that are signed as Rolex.
It is recorded that Hans Wilsdorf invented the name Rolex while riding on a London omnibus, the word chosen as phonetically, it reminded him of the sound made when a watch is being wound. As an aside, the word is one of the first examples of a “nonsensical” brand name, a word with no meaning whatsoever that has no positive or negative connotation in any language. First registered as a brand name in London on the 6th July 1912, the partnership used the Rolex word not as the name of their company, but instead as a signature on some of the watches that they imported. In short, at this point, the Rolex name had been born, but had not yet taken on any real significance.
