Antique 1836 Diary Travel Indians Prison Canal Boat Stagecoach Elizabeth Mygatt

Antique 1836 Diary Travel Indians Prison Canal Boat Stagecoach Elizabeth Mygatt

Antique

Here fresh from a local estate is a fascinating and at times delightful Antique Diary. The years run from 1836-1855. From what I have read I believe the author to be Elizabeth Mygatt, but I could be wrong or have spelled it wrong. One page is singed with her name.

It talks of travels to Utica in a canal boat, then the village of Syracuse where they talked with the Indians. A visit to Habain? prison with straw beds, work like, etc. They settled in Oxford in 1837 and traveled to Brooklyn, NY, several times. Travel was also described to Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, etc. In 1845 she travelled to Brooklyn on the Deposit Stage Coach.

Names mentioned, this is not all of them, are Mary Clapp, Mr. Fitch, Thomas Hayes, Gilbert Thorpe, Mr. & Mrs. Wells, My Donnelly, Deacon Franklin.

Diary in good shape with first 8 pages loose from binding. Most of the writing is pretty easy to read and there is little yellowing to pages, they are pretty darn white and clean. However the front and back cover pages are stained and a bit yellow, see photos.

A one of a kind and a wonderful piece of our history!!!
