Antique Signed Japanese 1879 Keyaki Shogi Chess Game Board GoBan Go Ban Table

Antique

This is a Japanese Shogi game board. Very similar in structure, material and shape to a Go board. The difference is it is smaller in width and has less squares, 9 x 9. The wood in this is Keyaki (Zelkova in English) A very hard, heavy asian elm known for it’s beauty as well as its durability. It’s one of the more expensive woods in Japan. This board is dated the 10th month of Meiji 12. October 1879.it weighs 8 pounds (3.6 kilo) The widths are 13 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches (34.5 x 32 cm) It is 6 inches tall (15 cm) and the board itself is 2 inches thick (5 cm). Making these out of Keyaki is unusual and the owner treasured this board to the point that he signed and dated it, then also had his personal signature seal burned into two sides and the bottom of the board.  This is an unusually beautiful old board.
