Description : A late 19th C. Japanese Meiji period lacquered writing slope/ lap desk. The gold toned outside with five cartouche designs of landscapes with raised texture and feel. The outside edges painted in a faux wood finish. The interior is mostly black lacquer the lid which opens to all the smaller compartments has a painted fan design, the inner part of the storage compartment with branch design. The case is made of wood, you can see the lacquer has survived very well over the years.
Size : When closed it measures 12 3/8″ wide x 10 1/8″ deep x 3 1/4″ tall. When open it is 16 5/8″ not counting the compartmented lid open…the storage area is 11 1/4″ and the storage area travels under the smaller compartmented are and measures 9″ so a standard piece of paper will fit in the storage area…probably about 100 sheets.

Condition : Overall the case and lacquer surface is in very good condition with minimal wear (see photos)…There is no key but believe the lock would work fine and line up fairly nicely…slightest amount of spring upwards in the fold open section that you write one…you can see the slight amount it has raised upwards over the years when viewed from the side…mentioned all for accuracy…I am sure the high bidder will be thrilled with their purchase.
