Mother of Pearl Inlaid Workbox & Tools

This
antique casket style workbox
is made of beautifully grained wood, walnut or rosewood I think. The
top and front
have
inlaid mother of pearl floral and leaf designs. The
interior has the
original purple silk lining
and the tool tray has 2 built in silk pincushions and 2 lift out silk
needle books. Compartments at the back hold 6 matching mother of
pearl spools. The lift out tool pad has steel scissors, a faceted steel
bodkin and
a mother of
pearl handled crochet hook and
stiletto. Sterling silver and steel thimbles are in
the
thimble recesses. There are 3 lift
up
silk lids with
compartments below
for
storing buttons and pins.
The bottom of the box
is lined in the original paper and was for threads,
projects and other
sewing items.
The silk moire top lining covers a compartment that lifts outward to
hold letters and patterns. It has a swiveling clasp to hold it closed.
The
English silver thimble is sterling (tested) and the steel thimble is
lined with brass.
Both thimbles are in excellent, crisp condition, in
round with no holes,
repairs or other damage. They are both about
an American size 9. One would have been used for fine embroidery and
the other for plain sewing.
The
mother of pearl spools have bone
bottoms and pull apart to slide on balls of thread. All of the
tools are intact and in
. The bottom of the box contains a photo pendant, a
brooch, a cow bone tatting shuttle, bone crochet hooks, a mother of
pearl pin disc and a hand tatted lavender sachet pillow. There are also
silks, ribbons, cord and linen covered buttons. I’ve left it just as I
found it.
The tool tray and silk linings are original and in amazing pristine
condition but the box has some issues. There is a crack in the bottom
and one at the back lid above the hinges. Both are tight and have been
repaired. There are some crackles through the veneer across the top and
it’s lifting up a tiny bit at the side joints. The structure of the box
is strong and sound though and it closes properly. The mother of pearl
inlay
is intact and the hinges are strong and original. It measures
12″
wide by 9″
deep by 4 3/4″ tall.
