A wonderful piece of high-quality Japanese Banko ware ceramics from the Meiji period – 1870’s/80’s
Banko ware is made in the style of Japanese 18th Century potter Numanami Shigenaga. The style was revived in the late 19th Century, commonly expressed in enamelled grey stoneware teawares, often in the form of a lotus or other flower shape. The edges are accented with gilt. The pentagonal shape is unique and the spout has “layered” look.
It measures Approx. 6.5″ high with handle, 6″ diameter with spout, 4″ high with the lid only
The body is flawless. It is missing the wicker handle and insert. The lid has been professionally repaired as there was a hair line crack. You can NOT see the repair from outside only from underneath. Overall, it makes a WONDERFUL display.
