Watch Buyer’s Guide
History of company: Founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892, Hamilton Produced its first watch in 1893, designed by H.J. Cain, one of the company’s founding members.
1893 Hamilton introduces “The Broadway Limited”, a railroad watch that was dubbed “the watch of Railroad accuracy”. Initially manufactured to provide the country’s railroads with reliable timing devices, the Hamilton railroad pocket watch was adopted as the official watch of the American Expeditionary Forces worldwide. A wrist watch version of the railroad watch was issued to General Pershing and his doughboys in WWI, accompanied Admiral Byrd on his expeditions to the North and South Poles, served the Picards well on their first balloon ascent into the stratosphere, and was on the wrist of the first American to scale Mount Everest.
1928 The Yankees win the World Series. Hamilton introduces the Yankee Watch, establishing it as a leader in watch design. Hamilton helped America keep pace with the energy of a new lifestyle. New Hamilton designs, such as the Yankee and the Piping Rock, projected the independent spirit of the day.
1930 Hamilton continues to capture the soaring spirit of the 1930’s. The world turns to the skies as commercial aviation takes off. Hamilton soon becomes the official timepiece of the most famous industry leaders — TWA, Eastern, United and Northwest.
1940 WWII Hamilton stops production of watches for consumers and creates new timepieces exclusively for military use. Close to one million Hamilton military watches are produced. Today, the ‘Hack’ has become very collectible among watch and military collectors.
1957 Hamilton’s leadership in engineering and innovation creates a significant breakthrough in timekeeping. Hamilton introduces the first electric watch in 1957. The Ventura becomes an instant success. See “Hamilton Electric”
1965 Inspired by the sleek lines of the Cadillac tailfins of the 50’s, the Ventura becomes the watch of choice for the icons of American style. Elvis Presley chooses to wear the Ventura in his movie, ‘Blue Hawaii.’
1972 The future is close at hand and Hamilton shocks the world with a completely new kind of watch. Manufactured at its headquarters in Pennsylvania, Hamilton introduces the world’s first digital watch – the Pulsar.
Today, Hamilton s primary collections include the American Classics collection and the Khaki collection, updated versions of the legendary military timepieces of yesteryear. Manufactured at its headquarters in Pennsylvania, Hamilton introduces the world’s first digital watch – the Pulsar.

About our Vintage Watches:
Any watch with a starting price of $500 or less has not been checked for timing accuracy, unless otherwise noted. Even though it runs, it may keep time well or it may need servicing. You need to take this into consideration when bidding.
We sell New, pre-owned, collectible and antique merchandise and art. All items not specified as being “new” may have indications of use or wear consistent with age, be sure to look at all the images in their enlarged form and all items are sold AS IS.
Any watch 20 years old or older may not meet the original factory specifications for water resistance, and timekeeping, they should not be immersed or water damage may occur.
We have in house watchmakers and any warranty given in the auction will void if another watchmaker or individual opens the watch. No returns will be accepted if an unauthorized individual opens or modifies the watch in any manner.
Please look at all images in their enlarged format, as photographs tell as much or more about an item as the verbiage.
Watch condition terms
To further explain our grading we offer the following definitions for our watch conditions we hope this clarifies the terms for the public and watch community.
Ultra Mint or New Old Stock (NOS) or New: Never sold to the public, may be virtually without flaw but may show minor signs of shop wear from being placed in and out of showcase. If original box is present box may show dings or minor tears.
Mint or Like New: Excellent condition, almost like new may have been carried a few times and put away in safe deposit box or drawer may have finish defects. Box if present may show marring.
Minty: Very Good to , one (1) the three (3) of the dial movement or case must being close to new condition. One (1)or two (2) of the following (dial movement or case) may have imperfections such as faint hairlines, minor brass on stem area, minor screwdriver marks to movement or case back, wear on bands normal scratching associated with normal wear, tool marks on back from case-backs being removed, enlarge images. Watch must run and look good. Box and papers booklets or tags may or may not be present and may be in any condition.
Good (Not Minty): Runs, a good carrying watch may have some wear or brassing on case or band, but dial and movement are presentable. A watch you would be proud to carry. Case and band may be in any condition enlarge photographs
Fair (Far from Minty): May or may not run, very salvageable, will clean up nice with a standard cleaning and minor part replacement.
Poor (the anti Minty): Rough, good parts watch, may need heavy restoration to run correctly.
To Fix, 2 Fix, for Parts, 4 Parts: This watch may or may not have all its parts and may or may not run. Expect it to only have only what is photographed and though it may tick when wound or rocked do not expect it to run.
We have not defined a term for watches that are total junk and only used for parts, this term is kind of an enigma.
