An unframed antique late Georgian mourning sampler embroidered mainly in silks, with some wool, on linen. This pretty and poignant sampler tells the sad story of the Bradleys: Edward Bradley married Ann Barns at St Mary’s in Nottingham in 1804 and the history of the family births and deaths is recorded in fine stitches on this needlework.
It may have been worked by the mother Mary, or one of the two surviving sisters, Louisa or Hephzibah, in the mid to late 1830s, as the last death date is for sister Ann in 1835 and the family member accorded most importance is father Edward who died in 1820. There is a pretty scene of a house and sheep in a field embroidered at the bottom of the sampler.
It is in good condition, though the background fabric has darkened with age, there is some loss to the lower edges and there is some adhesive residue stiffening the edges. The photos can be enlarged for more detail. The sampler was photographed against a white background.
It measures about 17 by 13.5 inches (43.5 by 34.5 cm.) I guarantee that this is a genuine antique sampler.
