This is a wonderful Weather Vane featuring the Tortoise and the Hare. I have never seen another weather vane with this figural subject.   I acquired this vane about 20 years ago from a gentleman in New Hampshire who had a large collection of gilded weather vanes. He was over 90 years old and well past the time when he could answer about his collection. The sale was actually run by his daughter, who told me that she herself was over 70, and all she knew was that he had been collecting the weather vanes his whole life. So I don't have an exact idea about the date of this weather vane, but I would think it dates from around 1890-1920.

This Weather Vane measures 28 inches tall from the bottom of the metal base to the top of the Rabbit's ears. On the wooden base, it is 35 inches tall. From the tip of the winning tortoise to the back foot of the hare, it measures 20 inches. The directionals are 16 inches long.

The figures of the Tortoise and the Hare have the most wonderful patina of worn gilding over old brown and green copper. One of he things I love most about this weather vane is the way the eyes of the two little animals are accentuated.  Even the tiny eye of the tortoise, which couldn't possibly be visible from the ground, if this were mounted on a roof. It's one of the best examples of Ars Gratia Artis I have seen in a long time.

This Weather Vane is is very good condition with no structural issues at all. Much of the gilding and has been worn away, but the Hare chasing the Tortoise still turns freely and the whole thing has a great whimsical affect to it.

The photos give an excellent idea of the great shape and patina of this weather vane.

AAFA

AAFA means Antique Americana and Folk Art and is used as a short cut to finding items that are true antiques, not reproductions, and are American. I guarantee that all of my items are as described. I will only use the AAFA designation for items which fit the criteria.

Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the piece itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match.
