Lot of five Antique 1796 18th Century English Kings
George III History Books Memoirs of English Kings
Owned by Henry Howard of Greystoke with his
Signature and Bookplate
This lot of five Memoirs of English Kings history books by
Brunswic Lundenburd were published in London
England in the
mid 1790’s they were part of the personal library of Henry Howard of Greystoke
Castle.
All 5 of these book bare his library Bookplate crest label of
Henry Howard of Greystoke and 4 have his actual signature. A disastrous fire did much damage in to the Greystoke
Castle in 1868, the book’s covers
show age and all so signs of this fire and were most likely salvaged by Howard
himself because the repairs to the Castle were conducted by Howard.
Some have stains. The covers are all there some are detached
some are attached, Pages are intact and I think look good for their age. I left
the set “as found†and did not try to clean or do anything to them, they are
dusty but dry.
Henry Howard (25 July 1802 – 7 January 1875) was a British Member of
Parliament, the eldest son of Lord
Henry Howard-Molyneux-Howard. Howard inherited Greystoke Castle from his father in 1824.
He represented the constituencies of Steyning
from 30 June 1824 to 8 June 1826 and New
Shoreham from 16 June 1826
to 15 December 1832. . He
was also the High Sheriff
of Cumberland in 1834.
Greystoke is about 6 miles North West of Penrith, and about
2 miles North of the A66. There has been a castle here, or at least a fortified
dwelling, since 1353.
This lot alone as a collection of 18th century
history books would value around $1000 , however the added provenience of this
set showing their famous owner puts the in a much different importance. I would estimate the value anywhere from
$2000-$3500.
