1907-09 German Regimental Foot Artillery Beer Stein
Intact Stanhope Image!
2nd Bavarian Foot Artillery Regiment
Description
Oberfefreiter or Senior Private 1st class Rohr served in the 2nd Bavarian Foot Artillery Regiment garrisoned in Metz from 1907-1909. This impressive stein is over 12 3/8 inches tall with great color and detail. Metz is located at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, now in France. At the time of serviceman Rohr enlistment, Metz was an important German garrison on the border with France. The heavy guns of the Foot Artillery pointed ever Westward to thwart a French invasion. Stein is in mint condition with no fading, bright vibrant colors. No lithophane lines. The finial is a small field howitzer with two cannoniers which has been professionally reattached. The Bavarian rampart lion has the glass Stanhope with the picture intact. From what I can tell it appears to be German monuments to the war dead. The roster is bright and not faded. The left side scene shows a gun crew with the bronze barreled 210 mm mortar. The center panel, a long barreled 150mm cannon with gun crew and telescope spotter. The right panel shows reservists in training marching past the Deutscher Thor or German Gate in Metz. The bottom right panel shows gun crews firing their heavy mortars. This truly is a wonderful memento from over 100 years ago, before the “War to end all Wars”
