This
is a vintage German air helmet
Draeger (also spelled Dräger),
Diving
helmet from the 1950’s, covering the complete head.
Made
of hard materials: Solid brass and copper. All items
original!
This
is an air supplied helmet Style DM 20 means: air is supplied from a
surface pump.
The serial number: 3591 on
the bonnet match the number on the breast plate.
Fabrication in Germany after
WWII, between 1948 and 1954
The helmet has two parts ,
the bonnet and the breastplate,
The breastplate and the
bonnet can be separated and reattached.
The
front port unscrews easily.
The helmet has a white
synthetic lacquer inside to prevent the diver from a short circuit underwater.
Polished
and lacquered. It is in
very good condition, with minor denting. Picture :
Outside: Bail out system: extra exhaust valve, operated
by hand.

I
was a Belgian 1* diving instructor (B.E.F.O.S) and bought this helmet in 1971
from an Antwerp
diver who used this helmet until the 1970’s.
COMPANY HISTORY: The Dräger company
from Lübeck Germany
was very famous for its air helmets : DM 20 and DM 40.
Draeger commenced operations in 1909 as a manufacturer of gas valves and making
dive gear.
In
1912, the company created a self-contained dive system combining a “hard
hat” style helmet with a backpack containing compressed oxygen.
