A VERY RARE ANTIQUE SILVER NOVELTY DONKEY & CARRIAGE PIN CUSHION 1909

A VERY RARE ANTIQUE SILVER NOVELTY DONKEY & CARRIAGE PIN CUSHION 1909

A

One of the rarer antique sterling silver novelty pin cushion in the form of a donkey with mother of pearl carriage to hold sewing accessories such as a thimble, thread etc, the donkey’s back being a pin cushion.  A wonderful piece fully hallmarked with the anchor for the assay town of Birmingham, the lion passant for the sterling standard guarantee, and the date letter ‘k’ for the year 1909.  Maker’s mark: A&LLd  for Adie & Lovekin one of the leading firms of the time for such fabulous novelty items.

This example is truly in excellent almost mint antique condition having come from a private source.  We have cleaned it a little but not too much, and found absolutely no dents, bruising, splits or repairs anywhere.Amazing condition for such a delicate piece, the donkey with remarkable detailing. Pin cushion is worn but complete and original.  The little carriage is made of shell with a couple of small chips to the edges but nothing of consequence.

This little donkey is a must for any serious pin cushion collection.  You will have to wait a long time before another one comes on the market. Its full length is 16.5cm (6 1/2″) the donkey being approx 7.5cm (3″) long.
