Description: A set of two antique silver shell end skewers, initialled ‘E.C’, numbered 1 and 3
Assay Office: London
Year: c.1780
Maker: Thomas Chawner
Dimensions: 38g (total, of which 1: 21g, 3: 17g), 21.5cm (1) 19cm (3)
Condition (out of 5, where 3 is the average condition expected of an item of its age and function): 3+ Very good, with very good marks. The tips are no longer sharp, and there are a few nicks and scratches (as you might expect in a skewer), the largest of which (pictured above) run for 5cm through the hallmarks and the initials on 3. The profile of 1 is very slightly wobbly, as if it has been used to skewer a rather tough and impenetrable game bird, but the skewers are otherwise in very good condition and make a fine set together.
