First I would like to state that I know very little about these reels, found them in storage where they have been since 1947. I’ve had a crash course in the basics and will try my best to describe them acurately. This is a vintage/antique Edward Vom Hofe Bonefish reel called the “Matecumbe”. The serial # X488 dates this to 1931. Ebonite rubber side plates free from cracks & chips only some minor scratches from normal wear and age, handle also free from any damage. Made from German silver. The catalogue description states that this reel has a 3 to 1 multiplying capacity but can be ordered in a 4 to 1 (I have no idea which one this is). Adjustable automatic tension drag with a sliding gear transmission and rim control, also a rim control free spool lever. Weighs 14oz and originally sold for $62.50. This reel has a replacement oil cap or nut as it might be called (see pic). there is no patent date on this model. I had a seasoned fisherman look at all the Vom Hofe’s I’ll be listing and he said it appears to operate as it should and might need only some minor adjustments, was amazed at the craftsmanship. when turned it clicks and turns smoothly. This belonged to my Uncle who spent many many years on his Yacht and when he died in 1947 everything from the ship went into storage. I do believe they were packed away carefully and oiled. I have not cleaned nor polished them I’ll leave that to the buyer, only wiped away any excess oil and dust. The foot I’ve been told has had a small hole drilled possibly for a rod.
