Superb Edwardian Sterling Silver & Rose Gold Open Faced Pocket Watch from Birmingham dated 1905
This Antique Pocket or Fob Watch measures approximately 2 3/4 inches or 71 mm in length from the top of the hanging ring to the base of the outer body by 2 inches or 51 mm across the width or diameter of its body from side to side and it is just under 5/8 of an inch or 15 mm deep from the front of the glass dial or face cover to the back of the case.
The body of the watch is made from sterling silver with a hinged back panel and internal hinged sterling silver movement cover, the watch has a superb white enamel face or dial under removable a bevel edge glass cover that has a sterling silver outer ring and the face has a black Roman numerals with blue steel or gun metal hands along with a lower seconds dial that has a black hand and black numerals, the top of the watch has a rose gold coloured winder under a silver ring that enabled the watch to be hung from an Albert chain and the back panel has been superbly engine turn engrave decorated around a shaped central cartouche that has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram, the watch has a working English 7 jewel movement that has the serial number 47220 all as photographed below and the inner case has been impressed on both the movement cover panel and the back panel with English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
E W CO – Anchor – Lion Passant – f
E W CO is the Birmingham silversmith or case makers mark, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter f is the date letter for 1905.
The Condition of the Case, Glass Face Cover & Face or Dial is used and Excellent for its age.
The Movement is Working and it keeps good time.
The watch case has No Large Dents, No Splits, No Holes, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the dial or face is in Mint Condition with No Cracks and No Chips as is the glass face cover, the watch is straight, the decoration is crisp, all of the hinges are working perfectly, the back and internal covers open and close tightly with relative ease, the silver hallmarks are still clearly legible although as this is a used antique pocket watch the time change is very temperamental as sometimes it pulls up enabling you to move the hands around changing the time and sometimes it will not pull up so this will need attention, the case does have some small shallow dents that are hardly worth mentioning and it has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected, a gentle clean would enhance it greatly and a full service is recommended before use. Personally I think that this antique open faced pocket watch can still be used today and that it would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it’s almost 110 years old.
This Superb Quality English Sterling Silver & Rose Gold Open Faced Pocket Watch from Birmingham dated 1905 is one of several pieces of antique silver that I have also listed.
